It’s aways sad when a long-serving member of staff leaves the team, and we are all especially sorry that Mostyn Jones leaves the University at the end of April. We aren’t quite sure how long Mostyn has been here, but there is a rumour that it was when flared trousers were all the rage – for the first time. Over those years he has helped thousands of students with their visual communication skills, and all of them would undoubtedly attest to how his calm, kind way of teaching has made his classes informative but also very enjoyable. As a colleague, Mostyn has been a dream to work alongside.

The thing that marks him out as special is his warmth and thoughtfulness – he is always thinking of others and doing what he can to help and support them. His home-made gifts especially, are legendary, and anyone receiving some of his craftwork, or one of his paintings would count themselves as very fortunate indeed. His office was always full of chaos but if you could eventually find somewhere to sit, there was always a warm welcome and a huge smile, and on once famous occasion, he was able to help an embarrassed colleague who’d split his trousers with the timely loan of his “emergency cords”. It’s a great testament to him that people all over the University and lots of former students all know him so well, remember his influence and help, and speak so kindly about him – that’s what happens if you are nice to everyone and are always there to help! A few minutes spent with Mostyn were always happy minutes, and so we’ll really miss him, but we wish him well in what he does next. We know there are some exciting plans involving engraving and we’ve already seen a sample of what he’ll be doing – he’s onto a winner there for sure. Bon voyage to you Mos – please come and back to see us when you can – somehow the corridors won’t be quite the same without you. We can only hope that you’ve left the emergency cords where we can find them.
