Where do I start? If someone asked me “how was your exchange?” I would say it was amazing, but if someone asked me on a deeper level, I would say:
I remember sitting at my desk in my uni house in Ontario, Canada debating on if I should finally go through with doing this “thing” that I dreamed of doing ever since I headed off to university. It was October 2023 when I started the process to apply to what ended up being the best experience of my entire life. I remember being extremely stressed out and anxious about what this experience could hold for me; the many “what ifs?”. Fast forward to December 2024.
I am now nearing the end of my abroad journey here at Swansea University and couldn’t be more grateful for what this experience has offered me. I always knew that my time abroad would be a life-changing opportunity, but little did I know that Swansea University would exceed every expectation I had. I could never have imagined that I would experience even half the amount of joy I have experienced while here, as well as the enriching academic experiences, character development and growth that I have gone through, in the best way possible. From having the opportunity to travel over 11 countries, and meeting the most amazing people, to the opportunities that opened my eyes to a possible career path for myself.
My positive experience with Swansea University started before I even left Canada due to the Buddy Scheme here. When I signed up for the buddy program, this past summer, while sitting in my backyard, in my hometown, I never thought that it would result in me finding a best friend. I simply thought it would provide me with a connection for when I arrived to show me around the campus and be a point of contact. Not only did “my buddy” help ease my stress before my arrival here in Swansea, but she showed me around Swansea, showed me the campus, and took me in like we had known each other for years. I think we both knew from the second we met that we would get on great.
To Liv, my “buddy”, and now a best friend for life; I will never be able to thank you enough for being such a significant part of my experience here at Swansea and for being my best friend. I will cherish the memories I made here with you forever and can’t wait to make more when you visit Canada.

When someone would ask me the question “so, do you know what you want to do once you graduate?”, it always felt like a daunting question and I would usually just say “no, not really”. Now for the first time, in my last year of my undergrad, I finally feel like I see myself pursuing a career in the field that I am passionate about. I feel I fully owe this to the faculty at Swansea University who were incredibly supportive and always encouraging me to challenge myself academically. This further led me to amazing opportunities to gain practical experience in my education. More specifically, I am so thankful to Beth, for the WRL reporter experience. It provided me the opportunity to see potential in myself and strengthened my confidence.
In addition, I have only positive things to say about the university staff support that is offered to students. Everyone I’ve interacted with here has been so kind and supportive to students, and a special thanks to my personal tutor. Not only is support so accessible but you can genuinely see their passion to want to help students be successful.
One of the big benefits of going abroad as a Canadian is the opportunity to travel. I couldn’t be more thankful for the ability to travel 11 countries during my time here at Swansea. Including, obviously Wales, as well as England, France, Monaco, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, and the Netherlands. I believe that part of education and personal growth is travelling. Through my travel I have learnt a lot about different cultures, different lifestyles, and I learnt a lot about myself.

Looking back, I can confidently say that my exchange experience at Swansea University was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It was not only a chance to further my studies but also immerse myself in new culture, make lifelong friendships, and discover career opportunities that will shape my future in ways I’m just beginning to understand. The memories I’ve made will stay with me forever, and the lessons I’ve learned will guide me through the rest of my academic and professional life.

Finally, I would like to share advice that I would want to give to future Swansea University Exchange Students, or any student who is considering going on an exchange. Firstly, I would say push yourself outside of your comfort zone. It sounds cliché and its easier said than done, but you will be so thankful that you did in the end. If you told me less than 2 years ago that this is where I would be, I would have laughed. Without the push from my friends and family, but also myself, I wouldn’t be here. Secondly, say yes to everything! Obviously when I say this it goes without saying make sure that what you are saying yes to is safe, but fully engulf yourself in your experience and take every opportunity you are given. Additionally, don’t be afraid to ask questions and reach out for support. There are people who truly care about your education, success, and wellbeing. Allow this experience to be a time where you truly find yourself, find new hobbies, try new things, and don’t be afraid to do things on your own; learn to enjoy your own company. For me, I found a passion for solo travelling. Lastly, have fun, be safe, and embrace every moment. It is truly life changing. I am eternally grateful and thankful for my experience. Swansea became a home away from home for me, and a place where I grew not just as a student, but as an individual.
