Juan Corcho-Ruiz reflects on his time with The Workhouse Production Company
Third year student Juan Corcho-Ruiz recently completed a one-week work placement with The Workhouse Picture Company, a London-based film marketing production company specialising in behind-the-scenes (BTS) and creative content. Located in central London, the company has contributed to major productions including Saltburn, Wicked and Silo, offering the student first-hand exposure to high-profile film and television work.

Throughout the week, the student worked closely with Phil Tomlinson, Head of the Camera Department, gaining valuable insight into the technical and logistical demands of professional film production. From handling a wide range of cameras, lenses and lighting equipment to observing the challenges of transporting and delivering gear on tight schedules, the placement provided a realistic overview of life behind the camera.
“I’d always recommend getting as much experience as possible – not just for your CV, but because it really opens your eyes to what your future could look like.”
Reflecting on the experience, the student expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from industry experts and gain practical skills that will support their future career. They emphasised the value of work experience not only as a CV enhancement, but as a way to gain clarity and inspiration about potential career paths within the creative industries.
Towards the end of the placement, the student explored video editing and colour grading alongside senior editor and colourist Tancredi Monaco. This opportunity offered a deeper understanding of the importance of post-production in shaping the final visual narrative and ensuring professional-quality results.
“Seeing how much impact editing and colour grading have on the final result completely changed how I view post-production.”
The experience also extended beyond filming. The student was introduced to the video and audio editing teams, whose work demonstrated the complexity and precision required in post-production. Being surrounded by industry professionals and cutting-edge technology highlighted why film remains one of the world’s most influential and commercially successful industries.
