Amelia Reflects on Her First Semester in Sports Communications & Journalism at Swansea University

by Amelia Garnish

As my first semester in the Sports Communications & Journalism master’s program wraps up, I’m excited to share some insight into my journey so far, highlighting the course, opportunities and my experience from these past few months.

Back to University Life

The semester kicked off in early October with a warm introduction to the course and a chance to meet my wonderful lecturers and fellow students. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, and I immediately felt a sense of support. I was initially a bit worried about transitioning from a Marketing undergraduate to Media postgraduate study, but my nerves quickly dissolved by how approachable and helpful the lecturers were.

Balancing my studies with my new role as Captain of the Swimming Team added a layer of excitement. Though it was a challenge to juggle both at first, I quickly found my rhythm, and the first few weeks flew by with both success in my studies and a record-breaking group of new freshers for the swim team.

The Course Content

One of my favourite parts of the semester was exploring the foundations of writing in sports journalism. I enjoyed the practical element of the course, from learning how to craft a catchy headline to writing engaging match reports.

One standout moment was putting these new skills to the test by writing my first match report for Swansea University Football Club. Seeing it published was such a proud moment and gave me a glimpse into how far I’ve come already with the help of the course.

Memorable Experiences

The course has already opened so many doors for me. Earlier in the term, I had the opportunity to attend a Wales Rugby League match against Jamaica. Thanks to Beth Fisher (my lecturer), I, along with some other media students, headed to Knoll Stadium in Neath for two days of media action. I learnt so much, and it was great to connect with some of the other students and learn about their media experiences.

With fellow media students interviewing the players

In the Sports Journalism module, we all had the opportunity to attend a Sports Symposium in aid of an assignment. Hearing from industry experts like Owain Harries (Communications & Engagement Senior Manager at the FAW) was both inspiring and eye-opening. During the symposium, Owain’s advice to us students was to build a network. So naturally, I took Owain’s advice and reached out to him, which led to an incredible opportunity to attend the Nations League Football match, Wales vs Iceland, as a freelance journalist. Before attending the game, Beth Fisher gave me a pep talk and so much helpful advice, so I felt confident and ready for the evening. The experience was incredible!

Applying what I’ve learned so far

The skills I’ve learned have already made a difference in my roles outside the lecture room. As Media Officer for Swansea University FC, I’ve conducted interviews, written match reports, and worked on building professional relationships with players and coaches—something I would have been far too scared to do before the course began. Every lecture and assignment have added to my confidence and ability to apply theory to practice.

Looking Ahead

The support I’ve received from my lecturers—Hannah, Beth, Joe, and Iwan—has been incredible. Their encouragement has made me even more excited for what’s to come in the next semester.
